Workout of the Week: CST50, Darien
Variety is the spice of life. For the past 15 years I’ve been indoor cycling, kickboxing, running and swimming. I’ve taken Pilates and yoga classes and have used kettle bells and TRX’s. Yes, there are 19,000 different variations and exercises, and while I love them all I can’t remember the last time I tried something completely new. That is, until last week.
Enter CST50. CST stands for Cardio Strengthen and Transform. 50 is the length of the class in minutes. The entire workout is done on a Megaformer. What is a Megaformer you ask? Is it anything like the transformer machine in Pilates? Not at all. This is a workout like nothing you’ve ever experienced.
Taken straight from the CST website: “The innovative Megaformer™/Lagree Fitness® workout is specifically engineered to perform unique movements that effectively combine strength, endurance, cardio, flexibility, core and balance training in a 50 minute session. This workout integrates the key elements of resistance and counter-resistance using a system of springs and pulleys in a sequence that allows for periods of zero gravity at peak muscle contraction. The Lagree Fitness® workout strengthens the body, tones the muscles, improves endurance, jump-starts the metabolism, burns fat, increases flexibility and postural alignment, and restores the body’s natural balance.” I don’t know about you but I’m sold!
What do you need to know? There are 10 Megaformers in the studio. There is always one instructor and one assistant that moves around to help with student’s form and with the set up of the machines. The instructors play great music and the open level class moves at a rapid pace with little time for recovery. It is 50 solid minutes of work (it flies by) but you are in for a kick ass workout like no other. It’s cardio, strength building/toning, balance work, flexibility and stretching all rolled in to one workout on the Megaformer machine. You’ll find yourself in plank quite a bit, doing mountain climbers and learning moves like the ‘bear’, the ‘wheelbarrow’ and ‘super squats’, all on the Megaformer. Yes, I thought it was extremely hard, thoughts of quitting creeped into my mind but the instructors keep you focused on the workout and push you out of your comfort zone. No two classes are ever the same and you can always increase resistance/ change springs to make it even harder (?!). Want to dip your toes before taking the total plunge? Try their Fundamentals class which moves at a slower pace.
CST50 co-owners Felice and Annabel could not be nicer or more supportive. Their instruction is clear and precise and not intimidating at all. They have mastered the art of pushing you to go longer and be stronger and encourage you to give 110%.
Why do we love CST50? Because we appreciate that results come from exercising outside of the box. In order to get results your body must face new challenges and try new things. This is it, the total package, in 50 minutes. My new addiction.
