Need to Know: “Crushing It” by Irene Penny at Athleta, Westport
Some girls have all the luck. You see them around: they are always put together, smiling and looking confident, while at the same time stunning and gorgeous. Then if by chance you get to know them, they happen to be nice, funny and crazy talented. Irene Penny (Silver Penny Photography) is one of those women, and her photography mimics her personal characteristics to a T. Her work is strong, beautiful and striking. Just like Irene, her photography stops you in your tracks.
Irene turned 40 this year and as a birthday present to herself, she wanted to celebrate women who inspire her. She appreciated that so many fitness images are seen from a male perspective and thought it would be a timely opportunity to photograph strong, beautiful women from a feminine and feminist point of view.
A departure from her most previous theme (oversized nature), Irene demonstrates that she can capture the most versatile subjects. Maybe it’s her experience assisting the Italian Vogue fashion editors on shoots with Testino, Leibovitz & Avedon, or perhaps it was her experience with the fashion editors at Allure, but search her website and you can see that photography (lucky for us) is her destiny.
For this project, Irene set out to capture large scale portraits featuring local athletes from the realms of CrossFit (shot at SISU where Irene herself crushes it!), indoor cycling (Rhodie from JoyRide), running (the running group #RunLikeAMotherWestport) and is still working on additional portraits of a yogini, a swimmer and a dancer.
The title of this collection is “Crushing It: Portraits of Women Athletes” She will be displaying her work at Athleta in Westport (103 Main Street) on Thursday, May 21 (opening night of Westport Art About Town), from 6-8pm.
Wine will be served during the event and the store will be open for shopping! A free raffle will be offered to everyone who comes to the event or subscribes to her Silver Penny Photography Blog, on her website: www.silverpennyphotography.com
